Teacher Magazine: Synthetic Phonics & a Balanced Literacy Programme

What is a balanced literacy programme?

First off, balanced literacy doesn’t mean a ‘little bit of this and little bit of that’ – it is not teaching an eclectic mix of reading strategies! It means that all five essential elements of a balanced literacy programme are taught explicitly, systematically and thoroughly.

The Fab Five of Literacy

As Get Reading Right has always stipulated, and the draft National Australian Curriculum goes on to agree, learning to read must take a balanced approach that encompasses the five core literacy skills of: phonemic awareness, synthetic phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
In the latest issue of Teacher Magazine* Get Reading Right Curriculum Director and literacy trainer, Jo-Anne Dooner discussed how synthetic phonics sits in a balanced literacy programme, and what that looks like in your classroom.

Virtual Conferencing with Elluminate ...

You may be wondering what on earth I am doing posting the above image. Its' a screen snapshot of an example of Elluminate (from the DEECD website.) Now your probably thinking, well what on earth is Elluminate and what does it have to do with me as a Teacher and Professional Development?

Elluminate is essentially your own private virtual meeting room where you can collaborate with colleagues on a familiar subject. It was a very straightforward piece of software to download and setup. The main tools you will require are a piece of audio, which can be as simple as plugging a microphone headset into a usb port or many newer web cams come with a joint audio device already installed in them, so you are set to go as soon as Elluminate has been downloaded.

Now I'm not one to immediately jump in with new software interfacing, so last week (or it may have even been the week before), I joined in and observed my first Virtual Conference through DEECD (yes they are offered and what another great way to access Professional Learning) I used my time to observe how Elluminate works, and how participants interact via chat and audio .. What a wonderful experience, I have now bookmarked the Events Calendar and look forward to further participation (pending on the background noise of course of the 3 Little B's in the afternoon.)

So go now and have a look at what Elluminate can offer you too!
